Tim Cook kicked off 2013 by making a second visit to China. The Apple CEO met with Miao Wei, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, to discuss the development of the information technology industry, mobile communications, and Apple's expansion in China.
The Cupertino company has doubled its number of stores in the country while its iOS devices have seen their popularity soar. Cook last visited China in March 2010, shortly after promising to invest heavily in the world's largest market.
Since then, Apple has opened five new stores in China and Hong Kong, bringing its total to 11. The last time Cook visited China, there were only six.
Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu told Bloomberg that no additional information was available about Cook's meeting with Wei, and she could not disclose how long the Apple CEO will be there or how many others he is meeting with.
In his previous visit, Cook had visited the Foxconn factory where Macs and iOS devices are manufactured, but it is not yet known whether he will visit it again this time.
Additionally, some believe he may visit China Mobile, the world's largest mobile phone carrier. And while iPhone sales in China have been a huge success, China Mobile has yet to bring the device to stores. They have been in talks since 2007, when the first iPhone was released, but nothing has been agreed upon yet.
Steve Jobs, in his biography by Walter Isaacson, revealed that he had never been to China. Tim Cook made two trips in 10 months.
