The European Commission has approved a series of e-commerce rules aimed at making Europe more competitive online!
In true European fashion, however, the proposals contain a long series of inconsistent compromises and completely avoid the most complex policy issues, rendering them largely useless.
Digital Single Market Vice-President Andrus Ansip said of the measures: “Too often people are excluded from accessing the best deals when shopping online, or decide not to buy from outside their country because delivery prices are too high, or are worried about how they will get their rights if something goes wrong. We want to solve the problems that prevent consumers and businesses from fully enjoying the opportunities to buy and sell products and services online.”
But the rules don't do that! While businesses in Europe are obliged to sell to any other country in the European Union, they are not obliged to ship the products there. So for example, a consumer from Poland can buy something from Spain but if the Spanish company doesn't want to ship it, it can inform the Polish consumer that he has to go to Spain to pick it up.
Another point of the European Commission's hopeless bureaucracy is that there will be no rules on shipping costs across Europe (which are clearly inconsistent) but a large sum will be spent on creating a website that will try to list these costs.
“The regulation will provide national postal regulators with the data they need to monitor cross-border markets and check how affordable prices are,” the European Commission announced. “It will also encourage competition by requiring transparent and non-discriminatory third-party access to cross-border parcel delivery services and infrastructure. The Commission will publish the prices of global service providers to increase competition and transparency of tariffs.”
Most likely, it is a huge waste of time and will simply become another service that Europe offers at great cost but no one uses!
