Microsoft announced last year that it would add extension support to its new Edge browser, included with Windows 10, but that feature still hasn't arrived, so now everyone is waiting for the Redstone update to get it.
In a post discussing the improvements Edge in 2016, Microsoft describes the work it has done on extensions, explaining that internal testing is currently underway and that Windows 10 Redstone preview builds released through the Insider program will be released in a first release soon.
“Last year, we announced our intention to deliver a new extensions platform for Microsoft Edge to replace the often unreliable and insecure native add-ons of the past. Extensions are one of the most requested features for Microsoft Edge, and we are building an extensions platform that is powered by web technologies and will be familiar to developers. Every browser is a potential vector for malware, so our extensions must be vetted and delivered and managed through the Windows Store,” Microsoft says.
And yet, uncertainty remains, as Microsoft is still reluctant to provide any details about when the extensions will actually debut in Windows 10 Redstone builds.
“Our app is in development and we look forward to sharing some early examples soon through the Windows Insider Program. We will share more information about developing and publishing your own extensions at a later date,” the company continues.
The reason Redmond doesn't want to give more information about the debut date of this feature is that it's still working on it, so any major bug the company discovers until the last minute could lead to a delay that could only create more frustration for its audience.
For now, Edge extensions are still in the works, but it's very clear that we're getting closer to the release date and Microsoft is moving forward with the development process. If everything goes well, extensions should be available to everyone by the summer.
