Cyberattacks, like the one against the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), are on the rise globally. But by knowing the steps hackers in a sophisticated attack, security experts are trying to get the upper hand.
As Geoffrey Vaughan, a security consultant at Security Compass, says: “Sometimes companies call breaches highly sophisticated cyberattacksto make it look like they were hit by the best.”
“In this case [of the NRC violation], the fact that they were able to observe the attack up to a month in advance obviously indicates that it was a serious, complex attack.”
Vaughan, who is an ethical hacker, told CTVNews that the process is complicated, but he broke it down into six stages, which most hackers would use to carry out more sophisticated attacks.
