Facebook's Aquila Solar Powered Airplane Demonstration
Facebook has revealed some additional details about their plans to bring the internet to the entire world, the company has released a photo of Aquila, their solar-powered plane.
Facebook's Aquila solar plane developed in the UK has the same wingspan as a Boeing 737, but weighs much less.
A full-scale version of the Aquila – the high-altitude, high-endurance aircraft designed by our aerospace team in the UK – is now complete and ready for flight testing.
Aquila has the wingspan of a 737 but weighs hundreds of times less, thanks to its unique carbon fiber design and frame. When deployed, it will be able to hover in a remote area for up to 90 days, providing connectivity to people below it, from altitudesof60,000 to 90,000 feet.
The company also announced that they also had a major breakthrough in their laser project and can now offer Internet speeds of 10 Gbps.
