Digital wallet from Vodafone and Visa will enable contactless payments across a wide range of Android smartphones
Vodafone customers will soon be able to use their cards in the company’s digital wallet and use their smartphones to pay for products and services at contactless payment terminals. With Vodafone’s new agreements with Visa and Carta Worldwide, card payments via Vodafone’s digital wallet will be implemented in more European markets from the second quarter of 2015 onwards.
The service, which requires a Vodafone NFC SIM, will be available on a wide range of Android smartphones. To use the service, customers will need to:
-Enter their card details into the digital wallet, where they will be stored on the Vodafone NFC SIM with a different name than that of the card for security reasons.
-Confirm that they are the cardholder using Visa's verification service.
This will allow them to pay by placing their mobile phone over a contactless payment terminal. They will also be able to check their mobile payment history using their phone wherever they are. Payments are automatically charged to the selected cards, which are protected by a user-defined four-digit code for higher value transactions.
digital wallet is available in Germany, Spain, the UK, Italy and the Netherlands. Customers can already add points cards to their Vodafone digital wallet, as well as pay with Vofadone SmartPass, which was launched in partnership with Visa in 2013. The development of Vodafone’s digital wallet is part of Vodafone’s mCommerce strategy, which is designed to provide alternative ways to pay via mobile.
