Hackers exploited a security flaw on the website of the Christian project Perspectives to gain access to its database, which contained eCheck payment information for transactions made by members. The hackers also managed to post their own advertisements on various parts of the page, promoting abortion pills.
Perspectives is a 15-week Christian religious project that focuses on four aspects of God's work: Biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic, attempting to highlight the purpose of God's work
The website's administrators claim, for their part, that the ads were probably placed so that the hackers could increase the popularity of the pages they control in search engines. However, they have not ruled out the possibility of a malvertising.
The date of the initial breach appears to be somewhere around September 2014, but it was discovered recently, forcing the Perspectives project to temporarily close electronic payment , especially at a time when there are quite a few people, since new registrations are now taking place for the Spring program.
Although no indication has been found that hackers stole members' personal information, for precautionary reasons their data is considered to have been breached and therefore, the site advises any member who has made online payments with eCheck to contact their bank to check their account movements for suspicious transactions.
The administrators of the Perspectives page immediately took appropriate measures to secure the site and its members' accounts.
