With funds of over 50 million euros, the European Union the installation and use of intelligent transport on European motorways, to improve their safety and efficiency. The projects include the road axis connecting Germany with Greece.
The action, which is part of the EU's Trans-European Transport Network programme, concerns various intelligent transport system, such as "smart" parking for heavy vehicles, provision of real-time travel time and traffic information. It will also provide safety and traffic information to all users, while ensuring the interconnection of the operation of these services across the EU.
These systems will be developed based on five projects, each of which will focus on a specific part of Europe. The one that concerns Greece is the Crocodile project, which covers three main road axes: the Baltic-Adriatic one, connecting Germany with Italy and Slovenia, the Rhine-Danube one, connecting Germany with Bulgaria, and the Eastern Mediterranean one, connecting Germany with Greece.
The projects as a whole should be completed by December 2015.
