A case of a database breach with legal content on an internet website was investigated by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate
Two 36-year-old Greek nationals were arrested in the city of Patras, and a case was filed against them for violation of intellectual property, on a commercial scale, by habit and by repetition
Specifically, they had "cracked" the passwords to the above database and, through their own website, provided access to the database to other internet users for a fee
The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate investigated a case involving a violation of the provisions of intellectual property law by individuals who were carrying out these acts on a commercial scale, habitually and consistently.
Specifically for this case, two 36-year-old Greek nationals were arrested yesterday (19.11.2014) at noon in Patras, who had violated - "cracked" the passwords in a database with legal content belonging to a large company, which operates in the field of Information and Communications Technology services.
Then, through their own website, they provided access to the database to other internet users for a fee, thereby obtaining an illegal financial benefit.
More specifically, the investigation of this specific case began following a relevant complaint - lawsuit, filed with the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate by an attorney-at-law of the above company.
Executives of the Cybercrime Prosecution immediately conducted an online investigation, the results of which, along with the allegations, were brought to the attention of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor's Office and a preliminary examination was ordered.
From the thorough digital police investigation and analysis of the data and evidence that followed, the two 36-year-olds were identified as the administrators of the website in question, through which the above illegal activity was carried out.
In this context, a team of police officers from the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate traveled to the city of Patras and yesterday afternoon, conducted searches, in the presence of a Judicial Officer, at the homes of the two 36-year-olds.
From the on-site digital investigations of the digital media found, their illegal actions as administrators of the website were confirmed, while two (2) internal computer hard drives were seized.
The two 36-year-olds were arrested and with the case file filed against them, they will be taken to the competent Prosecution Authorities.
The seized digital evidence will be sent to the Criminal Investigations Directorate for further laboratory tests.
