Owners of Synology's well-known NAS servers have to deal with a particularly unpleasant development, as according to an update from the company (pending the official press release), cases of Ransomware have been observed among many of its customers.
The malware encrypts parts of users’ data and demands a ransom of 0.6 bitcoins (BTC), equivalent to $350, to decrypt it.
According to the company’s current information, “SynoLocker” appears to only affect unpatched versions of DSM 4.3, but Synology is investigating the possibility of infecting DSM 5.0.
For the security of user data, the company recommends immediately closing any ports on the NAS that could provide external access to it, as well as disconnecting it from the router. It is also recommended to immediately update to the latest firmware version and create a backup copy of the files. Synology is investigating the issue and will provide new information as soon as it is available.
