Read how the car under test works, which aims to decode brain signals in order to improve people's everyday lives
German Henrik Matschke drives the pictured car with the power of thought... At this moment, he is thinking of turning the steering wheel "right" and the car blindly obeys the command given by his brain.
The pictured IX moves on the roads at an average speed of 50 kilometers per hour with its driver demonstrating the car's technological capabilities while it is wired with 16 sensors.
The car of the future that moves with the power of thought belongs to the program of the “Freie” laboratory from the University of Berlin.
The ambitious program, titled “Brain Driver,” aims to decode brain signals in order to improve people's everyday lives.
Imagine being able to drive a truck just by thinking. This would certainly be a dream come true for people with mobility issues. For example, people with disabilities could potentially be able to simply think of the terms “right”, “left” or “straight” in order to steer the vehicle they are riding in in the direction they want.
As the BBC reports, the innovative technology developed by scientists at the Freie Laboratory at the University of Berlin uses sensors that measure brain waves, which are also used in encephalograms.
With this method, they were able to convert bioelectrical wave patterns into control commands, such as “left”, “right”, “accelerate” or “brake”.
The car under test can only perform four basic movements, namely “left”, “right”, “accelerate” and “brake”. The big disadvantage of the car that moves with thought is to set an affordable selling price as the technology used is quite expensive.
