All records were broken in online video viewing with data traffic reaching 4.3 Tbps
Although most US residents have not yet abandoned television for the internet, watching events online is becoming increasingly popular.
The World Cup, even though it is still in the Group Stage, was the occasion to break the data traffic record for watching online videos.
The records were set by American services Akamai Technologies, ESPN and Univision.
During Monday's match between Germany and Portugal, 4.3 terabits per second of video streaming was transmitted over Akamai's network, breaking the previous record of 3.5 Tbps that was measured in the 2014 Winter Olympics hockey semifinals between the USA and Canada.
In the USA-Ghana match, data traffic reached 3.2 Tbps, without exceeding the 3.4 Tbps of Spain-Netherlands.
Of course, the US match became the most popular ever broadcast on the WatchESPN service, with 1.4 million online viewers.
Regarding Univision, the Germany-Portugal match was watched by 2 million online viewers, while the Mexico-Cameroon match was watched by 2.8 million users, which was a record for the broadcasting of sports events in the US, surpassing the 2.1 million online viewers of the USA-Canada at the Winter Olympics.
