The ban is aimed at ensuring the security of public computers after Microsoft ended technical support for the older XP operating system, state news agency Xinhua reported
Beijing has announced a ban on the installation and use of Windows 8 on Chinese public service computers, another blow to Microsoft, which already faces low penetration in the world's largest market.
According to Reuters, the ban on Windows 8 was ordered as part of an official directive for the use of less energy-consuming products.
The state-run Xinhua news agency said the ban was aimed at ensuring the security of public computers after Microsoft ended technical support for the older XP operating system, which was widely used in China.
Neither the government nor Xinhua clarified how the ban reduces energy consumption or enhances computer security.
