The number of threats to mobile devices continues to grow, and Google's Android operating system remains the most targeted mobile operating system, according to a new report from F-Secure.
According to the company, of the 277 new malware families discovered on mobile devices in the first quarter of the year, 275 targeted Android.
Furthermore, the company notes that it only discovered one new threat for iOS and one for Symbian.
No mention of other mobile platforms has been made, which makes Windows Phone the third largest most secure mobile OS platform when the top three most popular are taken into account.
F-Secure also notes that users of its Mobile Security products reported a variety of Trojans during the first quarter of the year. Most of them were designed primarily for silently sending SMS (most of them came from the Fakeinst and SMS Send families).
What remains to be seen is how the latest version of Google's Android operating system will affect the spread of these viruses, given the fact that it requires user confirmation when premium SMS messages are sent.
The report also notes that the first quarter of the year was a productive timeframe for the development of new mobile malware.
