The trainers of the seminar were officers of the Press Office of the Ministry of Public Order & Citizen Protection, as well as a staff member of the British College of Policing.
With great success, today (28.04.2014), an online seminar (Webinar) of the European Police Academy (CEPOL) was held on the topic «Strategic Communication using Social Media», which was organized by the Hellenic Police.
This training constitutes the first online action, which was proposed, designed and implemented ex’ entirely by the Hellenic Police and addressed to all States – Members of the European Union.
Specifically, regarding the organization and coordination of the seminar, the responsible body was the National CEPOL Department of the Police Academy, while the program's definition was contributed by Special Duty Officers of the Press Office of the Ministry of Public Order & Citizen Protection, who participated in the Webinar as trainers.
The 90‑minute seminar was conducted in English, using the tools ex’ remote learning of the CEPOL Electronic Network, and it featured an impressively large number of trainees from all Member States – Members (160), of which eighty‑six were Greek police officers.
The purpose of the seminar was to provide training on issues concerning strategic communication in the Police using Social Media, whose dynamic integration into the daily lives of Internet users, especially in recent years, has had a decisive impact on the relationship between citizens and police authorities.
During the online seminar, topics on the utilization of best practices in the use of Social Media by Police Organizations were developed, the use of Social Media by the Hellenic Police was presented, and with the contribution of a staff member of the British College of Policing the issue of using Social Media in the context of handling critical incidents was also covered.
Furthermore, discussions were held on topics that concerned the participants and clarifications were given to their questions, thereby promoting optimal collaboration and the exchange of useful practices and knowledge among them, as well as in cooperation with the trainers.
Upon completion of the seminar, an evaluation was carried out, which was favorable, and the necessity of undertaking other similar initiatives was highlighted, using technology in education.
This specific action demonstrates once again the climate of excellent cooperation and trust between CEPOL and our country's Police Academy, especially on the occasion of Greece taking over the Presidency of the EU Council.
The Greek Police will implement a series of similar actions in 2014, the most of any other police force in the European Union, in cooperation with CEPOL and the National CEPOL Department of the Police Academy. This event represents a sample of the pioneering role of the Greek Police and the Police Academy in matters of technology use in education.
