Twitter acquires Gnip

Twitter announced the acquisition of social media analytics company Gnip, which provides real-time insights into social media trends and data.

Gnip specializes in the collection and analysis of data from Twitter (but also from other social platforms such as Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, Foursquare), through which it draws conclusions about consumer behavior, trends, the popularity of items, etc.

“Every day, Twitter users share and discuss their interests and what’s happening in the world. These public tweets can reveal a variety of information and insights, so academic institutions, journalists, marketers, politicians, developers, and brands regularly use aggregated data from Twitter to identify trends, analyze data sentiment, connect with customers, and more,” the social network explains.

Gnip was founded in 2008 and is one of the first companies to gain access to Twitter data. The two companies have been working together since 2010.

No further information has been released regarding Twitter's acquisition of Gnip at this time, and the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Gnip CEO Chris Moody expressed his satisfaction with the new agreement, as by joining forces with Twitter, the company will be able to provide data that has been analyzed in greater depth and at a much faster pace.

The good news for Gnip customers is that the service will not be shut down, as is the case with many other companies that are acquired by bigger names.
