Over the past two decades, our relationship with technology has taken on a whole new level. Initially, the emergence of personal computers and then the release of other devices such as smartphones and tablets have managed to develop the ability of every person to type.
Social media has certainly contributed to the… outrageous speed, but also accuracy, with which the average smartphone user composes a message. According to studies conducted by two US universities, on average we can write 72 words in just one minute.
But beyond the incredible speed with which our fingers "grab" text, the systematic use of smartphones has given us another special ability. The accuracy with which we type is truly remarkable. By pressing about six buttons per second, we manage to have a success rate of... 94%.
The experiment involved one hundred high school students, who fully confirmed the incredible power of habit. As the head of the research, Christy Snyder, emphasizes: “When we are in front of a keyboard, whether it is touch or regular, we cannot control the speed of our fingers. In fact, we type at a speed that exceeds normal limits in some cases. This means that with the power of habit we can do things that we cannot even imagine. We just have to… get used to it.”
In the second part of the experiment, students were given eighty seconds to place the letters of a keyboard in the correct order. After being given a piece of paper containing a printed blank keyboard, most of them were unable to “fill” it in the correct order. Most of the errors were found in the upper left area, specifically the QWERTY letters.
This of course reinforces Christy Snyder's conclusion. Without knowing the exact order of the letters, we are able to type very quickly. This is a pure result of habit and proves that if we are systematically engaged in something, theoretical knowledge is not always needed to be effective.
