The cyber security company Hold Security LLC has identified stolen access details for approximately 360 million accounts of unsuspecting Internet users, which are being sold on the "black market", without being able to determine how they were stolen or which accounts they relate to.
A senior executive at the company told Reuters that the volume of data is enormous, while he estimated that the data was stolen in different cyberattacks that have not been publicly announced, and therefore the companies that were attacked are likely not aware of them.
According to him, the data includes usernames, which in most cases are e-mail accounts, most of them from Yahoo, Gmail and AOL, as well as passwords in unencrypted form, which makes it easier for hackers to breach them.
Another security executive at accounting firm Marcum LLP warned that hackers could do much more damage by stealing this information than if they were simply stealing credit card information. "They could have access to your actual bank account. That's huge. That's money that's not necessarily recoverable," he said.
