In an official statement, the Central Bank of Indonesia described the use of Bitcoins as particularly dangerous, at a time when the digital currency is becoming increasingly widely accepted as a means of transaction.
The bank's deputy governor Ronald Waas stated that the currency does not fall within the regulations of current legislation, as a result of which the security of transactions is put at risk.
Waas also pointed out the laws that place Bitcoins outside legal protection. However, if someone wants to use the digital currency, the Indonesian central bank can do nothing about it, since there is no law prohibiting it.
However, the potential risks inherent in using the digital currency could push people away from Bitcoins.
In the coming years, the popular digital currency is expected to be recognized as a monetary unit by other states, while so far, the use of Bitcoins has been legalized in very few countries.
