Smartphone sales on the rise

For the third quarter of this year, IDC recorded a drop in smartphone prices of 12.5%, reaching an average of $317/device.

According to a recent report by research firm IDC, sales in the smartphone market are expected to increase, estimated to reach 1.7 million devices by 2017. This means that this market will grow at a rate of 18.4% for the period 2013-2017.

One of the key factors in this development is the lower average selling prices for smartphones. Specifically, for the third quarter of this year, IDC recorded a drop in smartphone prices by 12.5%, reaching an average of $317/device. This trend is downward and IDC predicts that by 2017 the average selling price of a smartphone will be $265.

In terms of market share, Google continues to hold the top spot with 81%. Apple with a market share of 12.9%, and Microsoft with a market share of 5%. It is worth noting that although Microsoft's operating system lags significantly behind its competitors, it has recorded an annual growth rate of 156%.

Microsoft seems to be basing its hopes for a recovery on both the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet, which is expected, and the GDR3 upgrade, which will allow the production of Windows Phone devices with technical characteristics equivalent to Android devices.

Correspondingly, the fall of BlackBerry was impressive, recording a market share of just 1.7% for the third quarter of the year, while in the corresponding period last year it held a share of 4.1%.
