The "Person of the Year" that TIME magazine highlights every year is something like... a Christmas tree: it has no practical value, but who can imagine ending their year without it?
So does the TIME magazine "honorary" title: it has no bearing on whoever is crowned with the title, but it reflects a trend, a more general influence of that person in the world.
So this year, two very different but recognizable figures are vying for the title: Edward Snowden and Pope Francis!
Journalistic information and comments circulating on the internet "provoke" the well-known magazine to go beyond: to highlight Snowden.
“For some, he is a hero who exposed the secrets of a superpower. For others, a traitor to his position and country. Regardless of your opinion of him, one thing is certain: in 2013, no one else caused a bigger and faster domino effect in every direction and more complications in the world than Edward Snowden,” journalists characteristically write in TIME.
"His actions really changed everything, when you do something like that you are Person of the Year," another journalist wrote on Twitter.
Others cite the changes that Snowden's revelations will bring to the laws.
According to the… debate that has begun, yes, Pope Francis is the safe choice, but TIME should make the surprise, the upset.
The discussion continues until December 11th, when the magazine will be released. With the cover featuring the person of the year…
To name a few, let's mention some of the Persons of the Year that TIME highlighted:
1994: Pope John Paul II
1963: Martin Luther King Jr
1930: Mahatma Gandhi
1938: Adolf Hitler
1939 and 1942: Joseph Stalin
1979: Ayatollah Khomeini…
