Zoox , an Amazon subsidiary , announced today that its robotaxi is now available to all customers in Las Vegas . The company claims it is the first to operate an autonomous vehicle specifically designed for commercial use. The announcement follows approval from federal regulators, which allowed the company to expand the use of its robotaxi for demonstration purposes.
Zoox says self-driving vehicles will be available for passenger transportation on the Las Vegas Strip starting today. The rides are limited to pick-ups and drop-offs at select destinations, including Resorts World Las Vegas, AREA15, Topgolf, New York New York, Luxor and other resorts and entertainment venues. The company plans to add new destinations as it gradually expands its service.

Zoox robotaxis are fully autonomous, without traditional controls like pedals and steering wheels. The interior features seats positioned on either side, allowing passengers to look at each other during the ride. The exterior is equipped with sensors, including cameras, lidar and radar, and the vehicles typically do not exceed 45 mph during operation.
Zoox is also inviting interested riders to sign up for a waitlist for its robotaxi in San Francisco. The company has a license to test its autonomous vehicles in San Francisco and Foster City under certain conditions, but it has not yet received a license for commercial service in California. Zoox is also testing vehicles in Los Angeles, Seattle and Austin, with plans to deploy a total of 50 vehicles in both Las Vegas and San Francisco. “Over time, that will increase to meet increased demand,” said spokeswoman Marissa Wigam.
In Las Vegas, Zoox robotaxis will pick up and drop off passengers from designated zones at its partner destinations. Resort World and AREA15 have set up zones exclusively for Zoox with a “Zoox concierge” on site to assist passengers with any questions.

Rides can be requested through the Zoox app, which provides details similar to those of a transit service(e.g. wait times, license plate numbers of arriving vehicles, and options to submit feedback). For clarifications, there is a “help” button on both the app and the vehicle, connecting users to remote operators.

The city is an ideal testing ground: huge volumes of tourists, fixed routes between hotels and entertainment centers, but also infrastructure that can be quickly adapted. The special drop-off points with Zoox personnel show that the company understands the obstacle of the “first experience” and attempts to bridge it with human support.

Despite the optimism, challenges remain. Speeds limited to 45 mph show that the technology is still maturing. The lack of a commercial license in California is a reminder that regulatory hurdles are as tough as technical ones. But Zoox's move adds pressure on competitors, from Waymo to Cruise, to rethink the passenger experience, not just autonomous navigation.
