The new US President, Donald Trump, has appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to head the Department of Government Efficiency. The Department will operate, in a sense, “outside of government” and will work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget. Musk and Ramaswamy have until July 4, 2026, to complete their work.
“A smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, would be the perfect gift to America for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. I’m sure they’ll make it happen!” said Donald Trump, speaking about the work of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Elon Musk supported Trump throughout his campaign, and Trump has said that if he were elected president, he would appoint the billionaire to head a government efficiency commission. Musk wants to cut at least $2 trillion, which the Washington Post says is “virtually impossible,” unless it touches the defense budget or programs like Social Security. Musk has acknowledged that the cuts could have serious short-term economic consequences.
Following the announcement of his appointment to the new Ministry of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk made a series of posts on X.

“Either we make government more efficient or America goes bankrupt. That’s the ultimate stakes. I’d like to be wrong, but that’s the truth,” Musk continued.

The billionaire also pledged that all the ministry's actions will be published on the Internet for maximum transparency. People will see what changes are being made and if they believe that something important is being cut or something useless is not being cut, they will be able to say so.
