Future VR headsets could use a new type of lens inspired by holographic devices, say researchers in China. This proposed new type of bifocal lens can switch between one focus and the other with the flip of a switch, allowing users to change focuses similar to a hologram.

These lenses would be made of two layers of liquid crystal structures that can switch between two focuses with an external voltage. The researchers described their findings in a new study published Oct. 1 in the journal Optics Letters.

In particular, they can be used for polarization imaging — often used to enhance image contrast or for edge imaging, which emphasizes the outline of objects or to view finer details. Polarization can be referred to as the third dimension of light, with polarization cameras often detecting physical properties not visible from conventional imaging.

The team focused on creating double-layer structures, rather than the single-layer structures from which most liquid crystal devices are made. The structures were made from liquid crystal cells as well as a liquid crystal polymer — both of which are typical materials for developing lenses intended for holographic imaging uses. This allowed the researchers to change the intensity of the two focuses. Developing multifunctional holographic devices was an inspiration, but the technology could be used “beyond the scope of holographic displays,” according to the scientists.
