US and UK impose sanctions on two Russian hackers

The United States and the United Kingdom on Thursday announced charges and imposed sanctions against two Russian hackers, allegedly involved in hacking and other operations on behalf of the Russian service .

On Thursday, Microsoft and Five Eyes security services published reports detailing attacks by a Russian state-run APT known as Star Blizzard, Callisto Group, BlueCharlie, TA446, ColdRiver and Dancing Salome, which is being monitored. The source of this threat is linked to an FSB unit known as Center 18 and has targeted academia, insurance companies , governments, NGOs in the US, the UK and other NATO countries. The hackers conducted cyberespionage operations and influence campaigns, including one aimed at influencing the 2019 UK election.

The US Department of Justice announced charges against two Russian nationals, Ruslan Aleksandrovich Peretyatko and Andrey Stanislavovich Korinets, who are suspected of participating in FSB activities of this kind.

Peretyatko is an FSB officer, while Korinets has been described as a cybercriminal who assists in Callisto's attacks, specifically handling the registration of malicious domains used by the group.

The conspiracy was voluntarily disclosed against the United States, where the defendants faced charges of fraud . Peretyatko faces a possible prison sentence of up to five years, while Korinets faces a possible prison sentence of up to ten years. However, the chances of them being tried in the United States are slim.

According to a statement from the Department of Justice, there is a report that between 2016 and 2022, hackers attacked employees of various government agencies. These include the Intelligence Community, the Department of Defense and defense contractors, the Department of State, and Department of Energy facilities.
