Last September, Google Meet entered a beta program to facilitate live caption translation, allowing meeting participants to easily cross language barriers. The feature was widely rolled out earlier this year, but it only supported a handful of languages. Users could translate English calls into French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The translation also didn’t work the other way around.

Now, Google has announced that Meet users can start using the new feature to translate their English calls into Japanese, Mandarin (Simplified), French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish. Some of the new supported languages are still in beta, so you may experience minor issues at first – but don’t worry! Google is constantly working to optimize performance while also introducing more languages for your convenience.

Google Meet recently expanded support for standard captions to include a variety of new languages, including Japanese, Russian, Italian, Korean, Dutch Portuguese, and Mandarin (Traditional). It will take several days for these changes to fully take effect, so you may not see the new languages immediately. Note that translated captions are only available for meetings hosted by Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus users. Standard captions, on the other hand, will be available to all Google Workspace customers and legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers.
