Google's Health Connect is now available in beta

Google's Health Connect app has been released and is available for download in beta on the Play Store.

Google today announced that the Health Connect app is now available in beta on the Play Store . Health Connect is designed to centralize access to health and fitness data from a variety of eligible apps. Today, more than 10 health and fitness apps are releasing integrations for the new app, including MyFitnessPal, Oura, and Peloton.

The app syncs health and fitness data from eligible platforms and allows other apps to access that data with their consent, while providing ways for users to control their privacy. Developers previously had to create multiple API to share data between different apps, which limited developers’ data sharing capabilities and made it difficult for users to unlock that data for use in different apps.

With Health Connect, developers no longer need to create an entirely new integration. Google says that creating an integration with a new app is as simple as reading new data from Health Connect.

“For example, Android users will now be able to sync Peloton workouts to apps like Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers, and Lifesum,” Google said in a blog post. “Now, through a seamless integration with Health Connect , Peloton members will have the option to share their workout stats across the ecosystem of apps they use to support their overall wellness.”

Google app provides a standardized data schema that supports 40+ data types across six categories. The schema covers a wide range of use cases, from workouts to sleep tracking to vital signs measurements.

The app not only simplifies app connectivity, but also gives users more ways to control privacy by allowing them to monitor which apps have access to their data. In the past, users had to navigate multiple apps to manage data permissions, and developers had to build permission management interfaces themselves. Health Connect allows users to manage permissions from a single place. For developers, the app provides a permission management hub and granular permission management UIs.

Specifically, Health Connect is a simple UI that simply shows you the compatible apps you've downloaded, and then what permissions you've granted. And from here, you can grant or revoke any individual permission.

Google has partnered with Samsung to create Health Connect, a new initiative that aims to simplify connectivity between health and fitness apps. The company first unveiled the initiative earlier this year at its I/O developer conference.

Health Connect is available for download in public beta via the Google Play Store starting today. Google hasn't detailed its plans for a full public release. At launch, the app has integrations with Fitbit, Samsung Health, Google Fit, MyFitnessPal, Peloton, Oura, WeightWatchers, Flo, Lifesum, Signos, Tonal, Outdooractive, and Proov Insight.
