Google partners with Renault to develop a Software Defined Vehicle

Google's Pixel series is known mainly for its software rather than its hardware, like most Android flagships. Expanding on its partnership with Renault, Google plans to develop a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) that features advanced AI capabilities and new in-car services. In doing so, they hope to bring a similar experience to cars.

What is a software-defined vehicle (SDV): it is a car in which the entire system is controlled by software. The main advantage of this system is that it makes the car much more efficient. In fact, a vehicle defined by Software can be up to 50% more fuel efficient than a traditional car.

In an effort to develop this supposed "Vehicle of Tomorrow", Google will first create a Digital Twin of the vehicle. This will be equipped with AI functions and will be the starting point for Renault and Google to gradually introduce new AI functions and services into the car.

Renault says that the digital vehicle will allow "easy and seamless integration of new services into the vehicle, as well as Create new applications onboard (In-Car Services) and offboard". The Digital Twin will act as a virtual playground for Renault and Google to introduce innovative features that can be Transferred quickly to the real thing vehicle.

Discussing Renault's plans for the Vehicle of Tomorrow, CEO Luca de Meo said: "The complexity of the electronic architecture of cars is growing exponentially due to complexity of functions and of services that customers expect. Equipped with a common IT platform, continuous over-the-air updates and improved access to vehicle data, the SDV approach that developed in collaboration with Google will transform The vehicles us to serve the needs of future Customers.”

Renault plans to expand the use of Google Cloud technology for the following SDV use cases currently under development:

  • Real-time predictive maintenance and fault detection for faster recovery process.
  • A personalised in-vehicle experience (In-Car services) that allows for customised driving, such as EV charging stations and frequently used destinations.
  • Creating insurance models based on actual use and driving behaviour Your.
