Western Digital introduced a hard drive that connects to the motherboard via PCI Express at the Computex 2014 technology show .
Using the SATA Express, WD connected a hard drive with a SATA Express interface to the PCI Express port .
The SATA Express communication protocol is supported by motherboards with 9 series chipset , such as the Z97.
This new protocol achieves speeds faster than SATA III at 6Gb/s, while Asus managed to boost performance to 800MB/s data reading through SRIS
What WD achieves is the utilization of PCI Express slots on motherboards, which usually remain unused in a PC, while on the contrary the need for storage space is a given.
