It seems that Google is never going to actually pay taxes properly in European nations unless it is forced to. The same is true, of course, for pretty much all tech companies within the United States.
Even if the companies in question are expanding, they seem to be doing everything they can to pay lower taxes, which, of course, is understandable from the company's side, but completely unfair to the countries where they operate.
According to the Irish Times, in 2013, Google paid 0.16% on revenue of €17 billion ($22.8 billion), which means it paid out around €28 billion ($37.6 billion). Also, €11.7 billion ($15.7 billion) went to “administrative expenses,” which the newspaper says are royalties paid by the company to other Google entities controlled by the likes of Bermuda, a well-known tax haven.
Google runs its European operations through its Irish offices due to the low tax rates there. This has brought some criticism to the company from many countries where it is accused of selling ads locally without paying a single cent to local budgets.
Things are taking such a turn for these technology companies that European Union officials are taking note, forcing them to pay with the help of new legislation that companies must pay taxes in the countries where they operate.
Amazon, Apple, Google, and other tech companies are all in the same situation.
