Google's "space" acquisitions (see Titan Aerospace) seem set to continue with Skybox, a start-up that specializes in highly detailed landscape visualization using satellite photos and videos. According to rumors, the acquisition has already closed at $1 billion and all that remains is the announcement of the integration of the executives into the Google team.
If you remember from last year's presentation of the new version of Google Maps, Google had impressed the public with the new features and detail in its mapping, but think about how much they could improve if they had a few more satellites at their disposal.
Also, the upcoming acquisition of Skybox may be an important part of the development of Project Loon, the balloons that will bring the Internet around the world, providing images and/or an alternative communication path via satellites.
