An Estonian man who helped breach RBS WorldPay in 2008 has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his role in the attack that stole $9.4 million.
In a statement, the FBI provides details about the hacker's role in the fraud.
In November 2008, Sergei Tsurikov and his co-conspirators gained unauthorized access to the computer network of RBS WorldPay, now known as WorldPay, according to authorities.
At the time, RBS was working with the payment processing arm of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, in the U.S. By breaching the data encryption the company used to secure its payroll debit cards, the hacking group increased withdrawal limits on specific accounts and used its network to steal more than $9 million from around 2,100 ATMs around the world, using fake payroll debit cards.
