Especially in city apartments, WiFi is found weak and the wireless speeds are just for… crying – There is a solution
In apartments, WiFi is found weak and many times the performance and speeds are just for… crying.
The reasons are many but the main ones are the building materials and the overloaded WiFi transmission channels which are shared by dozens of routers per building…
What you can do:
1. Buy a router with transmission at 5MHz
The most «master» solution is to buy a router that transmits not only on 2.5GHz but also on 5GHz. So far, owners of such routers are fewer, so the transmission channels are still open. The downside of the 5GHz frequency is that while it runs faster, it passes through obstacles like walls more difficultly, so it needs to be closer to the user.
2. Check the surrounding networks
The most common cause of WiFi problems is the surrounding networks that broadcast from nearby apartments. Find where your neighbors are broadcasting, using a program like iStubler that will reveal all surrounding networks and the channel they broadcast on. The 1, 6, or 11 are the usual choices of router manufacturers. Find which channel has the least usage and note it.
3. Modify your own router
Discovering what's happening around you, go into your router's settings. See if you are broadcasting on any of the classic channels – it's almost certain. Change the broadcast channel to the free one you discovered using iStumbler and you will see a huge difference.
Your speeds can improve even up to 20 times!
