A software glitch that disrupted some Google for about eight hours early Tuesday, displaying multiple images of a car crash in Russia, sparked speculation that Google had been hacked.
The image that appeared in response to many searches showed a badly mangled car near a sign that said “stop” in Russian. It was unclear whether the image had been changed. It did not appear in every search.
The episode sparked speculation that the world's most popular search engine may have been compromised by hackers trying to spread propaganda related to the war in Ukraine, between government forces and pro-Russian rebels.
