The new Hellenic Police communications system with computer terminals and mobile telephony devices
"The Hellenic Police will acquire in the coming days a new digital communication system from a German company, worth approximately 600,000 euros, using mobile phones. This is in order to facilitate the contacts of the 18,000 police officers in the capital, who are now once again using the old analog radios after the abolition of the Tetra Olympic system. These phones will have an encrypted communication system, while this system allows group and individual calls as well as the exchange of video data, photos, etc.
In addition, funds were secured for the immediate repair and reactivation of 600 motorcycles of the DIAS team that had suffered significant mechanical damage and had been decommissioned. In addition, in September, the DIAS teams will replace worn and unsuitable service helmets with new ones, while they will receive service equipment (gloves, uniforms, service shoes) with a process that is almost complete.
These assurances were reportedly given to the presidency of the Attica Special Guards Association by the leadership of the Hellenic Police in a meeting they held on Thursday afternoon at the Ministry of Public Order.
The new Hellenic Police communication system, based on the existing network of mobile telephony companies, has the ability to locate all terminals in real time, record all calls, control and organize patrols, as well as check documents (passports, etc.) from the device with a simple scan.
It also has an alarm button and allows the creation of communication groups per incident. This mobile phone system is already used by the Anti-Terrorism Service and may be expanded to police services outside of Attica.
As stated in the announcement by the president of the Attica Special Guards Association, Mr. Vasilis Doumas, "we expect the implementation and realization of the above self-evident demands that are considered necessary for the protection of the Greek Police services.".
According to information, in the last 24 hours, the leadership of Katehaki Avenue had been asked to abolish DIAS in its current form and with its central administration and split it into the five sub-directorates of Attica (Athens, Piraeus, Northeast, West and Southeast Attica). However, the leadership of the Hellenic Police on Tuesday afternoon reportedly pointed out that "no such issue exists and only the best coordination of matters related to DIAS's operational planning is sought.".
