Turkey's Constitutional Court today ordered the lifting of the access block on the YouTube website imposed by the Islamic-conservative government two months ago, on the grounds that this action violates freedom of expression.
On March 27, Turkish authorities blocked YouTube for "national security" reasons, after the site posted an illegally recorded meeting of high-ranking Turkish officials on the war in Syria.
The Constitutional Court's order is addressed to the Telecommunications Authority of Turkey (TIB) which was responsible for implementing the ban.
Many YouTube users had appealed the ban in court and were successful, but the government did not lift the block. The Constitutional Court had ordered Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government in early April to also lift the ban on the messaging site Twitter.
Erdogan declared war on social networking sites because some users were posting information on them that he described as slanderous about his involvement in corruption scandals. The Turkish government’s actions were heavily criticized both at home and abroad.
