Yet ATMs are the place where more and more scams are setting up traps for their victims. Especially when the holidays approach, electronic fraud peaks.
Experts warn that unattended ATMs, especially those located in open areas and far from bank branches, are easier to trap and, of course, defraud citizens.
It is recommended to choose ATMs in branches and secured areas, and especially to choose ATMs indoors.
Banking executives emphasize that electronic fraud has recently reached enormous proportions.
Every year, the loot of electronic fraud amounts to approximately 5 million euros, but it shows upward trends, which causes a "headache" for bankers. In fact, in addition to ATMs, a significant increase is also observed in electronic banking, where the cunning ones are looking for and finding new ways to steal money and sensitive personal data.
How to protect yourself from ATM fraud:
– Avoid having your card and PIN in the same place
– Prefer indoor ATMs
– Make sure no one is watching you
– In case of theft or loss of your card, inform the bank immediately
– If you are approached by someone telling you that you have lost money, immediately check if you have the correct withdrawal card
– Cover the ATM keyboard with your hand or a piece of paper when typing the code
…and what to look out for in online transactions
– Do not respond to messages asking for passwords or other personal information
– Change the passwords you use in e-banking frequently
– Connect directly to the bank’s website and not through an external link
– If you notice any activity, contact your bank immediately
