Micron and Anthropic sign multi-year AI memory supply agreement

Micron Technology and Anthropic have signed a strategic agreement linking the memory maker with the AI company in three areas: a multi-year supply agreement for hardware that runs Anthropic’s models, a joint effort to design memory and storage architectures around AI workloads, and a strategic investment by Micron in Anthropic’s latest funding round.

As part of the deal, Micron will provide high-bandwidth memory (HBM), DRAM and solid-state drives (SSDs) for Anthropic’s data center infrastructure. These product lines address the bottlenecks faced by large AI systems: HBM feeds data to accelerators quickly, DRAM holds the working set and SSDs store additional data.

For a company like Anthropic, which trains and serves models at scale, securing this supply is a strategic necessity. The two companies will also jointly analyze how memory and storage subsystems perform across different workloads, with the goal of improving performance, energy efficiency, and what they describe as a “token economy” in Anthropic’s infrastructure.

Each token produced by a model incurs costs in energy and silicon, and reducing these costs is a key tool for AI companies that doesn't just involve buying more chips.

Micron has also developed Anthropic’s Claude models internally to enhance coding and enable various uses across its engineering, manufacturing and business operations. This arrangement illustrates the cycle the AI industry is pursuing, where technology is sold in part based on the vendor’s own use of it.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Micron did not specify the amount of its investment in Series H . Both companies omitted those details from their announcement, making it difficult to estimate the size of the deal in dollar or capacity terms.

However, it is known that Anthropic had confidentially filed for an IPO in the US on June 1, 2026, after raising $65 billion in a Series H round at a valuation of $965 billion. This round was previously reported as raising $30 billion at a valuation of $900 billion and included several strategic backers, with Micron now among them.

This trend of chip and cloud giants investing in AI labs that buy their hardware has become well-known, blurring the lines between supplier and shareholder. Google has committed to investing up to $40 billion in Anthropic, and NVIDIA has made numerous investments in companies that use its accelerators.

Micron's move positions it similarly, combining a supply relationship with an ownership stake. Neither company provided a timeline for when their joint architectural work will yield results, nor did they disclose the amount of HBM or storage capacity covered by the supply agreement. Anthropic's confidential filing keeps its detailed financials private for now, with the next specific update on the partnership expected when Micron reports its earnings.
