In Apple's new ads about AI, we're all fools

Apple 's ads usually stand out for their well-crafted presentation and the entertainment they offer.

However, they are not always infallible. A few months ago, the company released a controversial ad for the iPad Pro M4, in which a hydraulic press crushes creative equipment. Although the iPhone apologized soon after the debacle, it seems that it has not learned from its mistake.

In a new ad, the Cupertino company promotes Apple Intelligence as a tool for creating deceptive slideshows that act as last-minute birthday gifts.

The ad shows two kids giving their dad thoughtful birthday gifts, but the forgetful wife realizes she hasn’t bought anything. So she pulls out iPhone 16 Pro and opens the Photos app. She then uses Apple Intelligence to quickly create a slideshow of some of her husband’s photos. While the husband happily browses through the collection, the wife smiles slyly, while the lyrics “I’m a genius” play in the background.

Unfortunately, this ad implies that children's actual gifts, for which they have spent time, money, and energy, can be replaced by a generic slideshow prepared by Apple Intelligence in a matter of seconds.

While this feature is nice, photo library apps from various companies have offered similar features for a long time. However, it's almost unthinkable that it can replace a personal gift, let alone for a partner's birthday.
