Nothing: The New Highly Competitive Ear & Ear (a)

Nothing Ear Ear (a)

The headphones Nothing Ear and Ear (a) prove that they can (almost) compete with the behemoths.

It may not rock the Apple and Samsung ecosystem, but Nothing can compete with them in the audio sector - and at a cheaper price.

Nothing is coming out with new handsets at a faster pace than smartphones. The company just unveiled the Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (a), with prices €149 Euro and €99 Euro respectively. Together, these are Nothing's fourth and fifth products in the headphone category. First came the original Ear 1, which stood out for its partially transparent design, but suffered from bugs and inconsistent sound performance. Then Nothing targeted a different audience with the open-style Ear Stick headphones. And a year ago, the company solved its reliability and sound quality problems with the Ear (2). Now he's back for another round.

And guess what? Yes, they still look exactly the same.

The Nothing Ear and Ear (a) both retain the design released in 2021, with improvements again focused on everyday performance. In the Ear prototype headphones, the sound profile has been changed once again to include new personalization options, while their battery life has been extended by 25%. There is also new regulation bass boost to give a strong bass in the low end.

At the same time, the more affordable Nothing Ear(s) add a bit of colour to Nothing's life for the first time: they're available in yellow, a colour that's pretty close to the adorable Playdate. But the earphones themselves look exactly like the more expensive Ear, right down to the components you can see through the transparent part of the body. And they feel exactly the same as the Ear 2 once you put them on. They're comfortable enough, but the Nothing includes three sizes of silicone, not sure if it will cover the whole range of ears out there.

The similarities extend to the way they work. Both have the same power active noise cancelling and can attenuate up to 45dB of noise, which is twice as much as Ear 2 was capable of. Both pairs of headphones are dust and water resistant IP54, although the Ear case is more durable, with an IP55 rating compared to an IPX2 rating for the smaller Ear case (a). Spending more money on the Nothing Ear also allows you to wireless charging their.

The battery life is also adequate, lasting more than 5 hours in both headsets with active noise cancelling or better than 8 hours in use without.

Nothing also improved voice call performance and AI voice isolation on both sets of headsets.

Where Nothing Ear wins is in the fidelity of the sound and the level of customization you can apply to it. Nothing says that the Ear have the "most advanced" driver system that uses a ceramic diaphragm which is "rare view on audio products" and improved rich reproduction. It also partnered with a company called Mimi for hearing tests in the Nothing X app that creates a personal audio profile for your unique hearing characteristics. They also feature a EQ function that allow you to customize a graphical interface and create profiles for different music genres. Once Nothing Ear becomes available, you'll be able to share your preferred settings with other owners (and import theirs) via a QR code.

So far, those who have tried them have been satisfied by the sound of Nothing Ear. But can they compete with those offered by companies like Apple, Samsung, Google? No. There is NO Head Tracking Spatial Audio for example. But in terms of sound quality, they compete with headphones from companies with far more resources.

They're honestly in the same room, so you're not sacrificing much if you really want Nothing's colourful headphones.

And you still remain with many features, such as the manifold connection, the near-pair (for Android), the Microsoft Swift Pair and a functional low-latency gaming mode in the cheapest headphones.

Both of Nothing's new headphones are a very solid value. And they're only going to get more capable as the months go by: the company plans to add the ChatGPT on Nothing Phone and its headset, which will allow you to question the AI via voice commands. The headset is more convincing for these interactions, so stay tuned for the release of the headset and all the new features that will be combined when this update is available.
