According to Gurman, the design that Apple developed in 2020 was similar to a rounded vehicle, the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle. The truck looked the same front and back, giving the impression that it was always moving forward. Gurman points out that the vehicle was differentiated from any other mass-produced vehicle of the time and was designed for fully autonomous driving.

Although Apple has changed the interior appearance of its car many times, the look remained minimalist, with seats reminiscent of a limousine or private jet, seating four people. In some publications, there was a large TV in the centre for video viewing and FaceTime. On the roof of the vehicle, several iPad-sized screens were mounted to give passengers access to some functions. A specialized air conditioning system ran air along the sides of the interior, instead of "hitting" the passengers' faces directly.

The first design of the Apple Car looked like the Apple minibus Volkswagen of the 1950s that Apple called Bread Loaf. The second vehicle design looks like the 2017 Volkswagen ID Buzz prototype before VW unveiled its concept. The third design, reminiscent of the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle, excited CEO Tim Cook and COO Jeff Williams.

The most recent upgrade required Apple to add a steering wheel and pedals. The van's sliding doors were replaced with gull-wing doors. However, it's still all moot and, while Apple could have changed the look of the car as it did with the smartphone chose to maintain its authenticity, as the project still had a long way to go and several more months of development before it was ready for Traffic.
