Spotify is taking full advantage of artificial intelligence (AI). After launching an AI DJ this year, the service is now testing ways to automatically create playlists.
The source code for this discovery comes from an observation made by product designer and hashtag inventor Chris Messina. Messina posted screenshots to Threads , which show lines of code indicating a feature called “AI Playlist,” as well as a line of text that says “Get playlists based on your preferences.”

When the new feature launches, it will act as a kind of ChatGPT for Spotify. Messina suggested that it could be integrated into Spotify Blend. In this feature, two users would be able to combine their music preferences and receive an algorithmically generated playlist that tries to guess which of each user's favorite music the other might also like.
“At Spotify, we continue to try and think about how to further improve our products and deliver value to users . However, we cannot speculate on potential new features and have nothing new to share at this time,” according to a Spotify spokesperson.
Spotify has been exploring the idea of playlist creation with the help of “Niche Mixes.” According to the company, “Niche Mixes” are “a set of personalized playlists that combine all the features of our Mixes with a playful character.” Users can search the platform (in the search bar) and find the keyword “mix,” which will greet them with a playlist that matches that search. However, Spotify confirmed that Niche Mixes are not powered by artificial intelligence, but are based on a personalized algorithm.

In February, Spotify introduced an impressive AI-powered DJ, considered the latest in the music scene. The DJ selects songs he believes will appeal to users, accompanying his choices with appropriate jokes to provide an enjoyable listening experience.
The AI used by Spotify to support DJs wasn't built from scratch, but was developed after the company acquired Sonatic. Sonatic, a technology , specializes in developing voice-based AI.
