Moovit: Will show the live location of public transport vehicles

On Tuesday, Israeli urban travel planning app Moovit announced a new feature that allows users to track the movements of transit lines along a map in real time. In addition to Moovit’s real-time arrival countdown, the new feature provides users with more accurate information about their travel times, according to the company.

Yovav Meydad, head of development and marketing at Moovit, explained to TechCrunch that “Live Location offers the ability to see transit lines, which appear on the map as icons, moving across the map as they progress along their route.” He went on to say that feature is accessible from any Moovit screen, where a real-time arrival countdown is available via what he called an “Action Bar” at the bottom of said screen.

Live location is now available for public transport vehicles that have a GPS, including buses, trains, trams, metros and ships in more than 220 cities in 38 countries.

To see where your line is in real time, simply tap the “Live Location” button on the bottom bar of the screen. A map will open and an icon will appear that moves along the transit line, leaving Moovit users looking at their phones anxiously as the minibus icon gets closer and closer to their stop.

Meydad said passengers will also be able to see when the tracking data was last updated and receive service alerts for that specific line. In addition, users will be able to see multiple lines moving on the map at the same time.

“Having this extra context allows users to consider all their options and make the best choice to get where they want to go quickly,” said Meydad.

Moovit is an app designed to help users navigate public transportation in cities around the world. It works by combining real-time information from official transit providers with crowd-sourced data from other riders. This allows Moovit to provide up-to-date information about routes, schedules, delays, and more. The app also includes features like route planning, turn-by-turn directions, estimated arrival times, service disruption alerts, and more.
