Spotify is completely separating the play and shuffle buttons — but only for Premium subscribers. Today, the company announced that it’s starting to roll out individual buttons for the two functions, replacing the combined play/shuffle button that currently sits at the top of playlists and artist pages. The change is expected to hit Android and iOS devices “in the coming weeks.”.

“This new change will let you choose your preferred mode at the top of your playlists and albums and listen however you want,” Spotify wrote on its blog. “Whether you love the joy of the unexpected with Shuffle mode, or prefer to listen to tunes in order pressing Play, Spotify is here for you.”
Spotify’s tendency to shuffle tracks has, at times, frustrated artists who want their albums to be heard in their original order. “We don’t put so much thought and care into our track listings for no reason,” Adele wrote last year. That led Spotify to default to the standard play button on album pages instead of the play/shuffle combo. Now, Spotify Premium customers will see individual buttons throughout the app . “From the moment you press play on Spotify, you decide how you want to listen to your favorite playlists or that new album you’re obsessed with ,” the company wrote.

While it's undoubtedly a small change to the app — literally just a button — it's clearly a feature that all users and can't be a premium offering. Other major music streaming apps, like Apple Music and Amazon Music, already have separate Play and Shuffle buttons.
