iOS 15 Messages bug: secretly deletes backed up photos

According to MacRumors, by deleting a thread from the Messages app and creating a new thread in the iCloud backup then, all photos saved from the deleted thread are removed from the users' photo libraries. This happens despite the fact that the images were originally backed up to iCloud. The bug is of great concern because it could permanently delete some people's photos without them even noticing.

For this error to occur, MacRumors reports the following steps:

  • Save a photo from a Messages conversation to Camera Roll.
  • Check to see that the photo has been saved.
  • Delete the Messages conversation from which the photo originated. The photo will still be in the iCloud Photo Library at this point.
  • Run an iCloud Backup and the photo disappears.

So, any average user who deletes Messages threads may end up losing photos that have been shared.

It is worth mentioning that Apple has not fixed this bug in iOS 15.1 beta 2. Some users have stated that it is still present in the beta version. Most likely Apple will fix it in a future beta release of iOS 15.1 and may include a code update in a possible iOS 15.0.1 update to release it as soon as possible. iOS 15.1 may be weeks away from public release and a bug like this requires immediate attention.
