The fifth season of the Netflix television series “Orange is the New Black” was leaked in April after the hacker group “The Dark Overlord” managed to enter the Larson Studios network due to the insecure Windows 7 system.
Larson Studios explained that the breach was first carried out on a Windows 7 system and their computers were not the primary target of the attack. "Essentially, it was just a simple walk-through to find a computer they could open. We were not their target," a company spokesperson stressed.
Most interesting of all is that Larson Studios paid the hacker not to leak the unreleased “Orange is the New Black” season, but despite the payment, all the episodes ended up online.
The Dark Overlord claims that despite receiving 50 bitcoins, which is equivalent to $50,000, it decided to release the season online because Larson Studios did not honor their agreement.
Hackers usually force victims to sign written agreements. The agreement with Larson Studios stipulated that the company would not contact the FBI to investigate the breach. However, since the agreement was not honored, the hackers proceeded to leak the entire season.
"We have determined that Larson Studios violated our agreement, so we have every right to take action against any customer who violates the agreement," the hacker said.
It is claimed that The Dark Overlord could also have other unreleased television work in its possession that is intended for the television channels CBS, NBC and ABC, but this information has not yet been confirmed.
