Smartphone addiction can cause problems not only for the person who sustains it, but also for those around them. A study conducted in South Korea found that women are more prone to smartphone addiction, compared to men.
The study was conducted by Professor Chang Jae-yeon of Ajou University and is based on a survey of 1,236 students conducted at six schools in the country, according to the Korea Times.
The results showed that women are actually more addicted to smartphones than men, contrary to popular belief.
The study found that 52% of women in the survey used their phones for four hours a day or more, while only 29.4% of men spent that much time checking their phones. 22.9% of women used their smartphones for six hours a day, double the rate of 10.8% of men.
Women use their mobile phones mainly to check social networking sites, especially Facebook and Instagram.
This finding is consistent with previous statistics that showed that there are more female accounts on Facebook than male accounts. Men use their smartphones during breaks, while 37.2% of women constantly check their phones, even when talking to other people.
20.1% of women who participated in the study said they feel extremely unsafe when they cannot use their smartphones, while only 8.9% of men felt the same.
The study states that women's desires for networking and communication are much stronger than men's, making them more vulnerable to addiction to social networking sites and their smartphones.
The study concluded that women's addiction is 10% higher, compared to men's.
