The National Intelligence Service is investigating an extremely strange case involving the interception of personal data from e-mails, according to information leaked to the press today.
According to officials, this is a case of hacking of approximately 15,000 passwords to electronic mail accounts (e-mail). It has not been clarified whether the hacked data was harvested from a specific website or is a targeting of multiple online services.
All that has been disclosed is that the Greek authorities were informed by a foreign security service that Greek users have been targeted by hackers and were provided with the relevant evidence.
At this moment, the EYP aims primarily to determine who owns the intercepted passwords and the exact country of origin of the person who carried out this malicious act. The investigation, although still in its early stages, shows that the act was carried out by a single person who stole the passwords.
Of course, we estimate that the theft of 15,000 passwords is perhaps not one of the largest cases that has occurred in our country. At a time when hackers often use SQL Injection methods to extract data from website databases of 100,000+ users, we understand that the leak can be considered “small”.
Personal data, interception and trafficking thereof have been identified several times by the Prosecution of Electronic Crime with the cases, however, they are still in the Greek Courts and the implementation of the criminal provisions & the imposition of penalties are delayed (unjustly)!
We believe that the National Intelligence Service and the Prosecution of Electronic Crime should make public the email addresses that have been targeted or contact their owners so that targeted users are aware that there is a possibility of their data being leaked.
