Two high school football players from Steubenville have been arrested in a rape case that took place in the city. They face charges of sexually assaulting a young girl. The case was solved by a group of Anonymous when they leaked significant evidence that proved the guilt of the perpetrators. This evidence included tweets, photos from Instagram, and a 12-minute video. But it seems that one of the Anonymous members will receive a longer sentence than the rapists.
As Mother Jones reports , 26-year-old Deric Lostutter — who goes by the alias “KYAnonymous” for his role in the Steubenville rape case — could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the hacking crimes he’s accused of. The FBI raided Lostutter’s home last April. The internet hacker told Mother Jones that he believes the FBI’s investigation was prompted by Steubenville authorities wanting to send Lostutter a clear message: He shouldn’t have been involved.
“They want to make an example of me,” Lostutter says. He continues, “In the closed society of a small Ohio town, many influential figures in the community—like the high school football coach—played a role in covering up the rapists,” because it was easier than disrupting the status quo.
The two teenagers convicted of rape, Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond, face sentences of up to two years in a juvenile detention center. Because they are both juveniles, they will not spend much time in prison, unlike Lostutter, who is an adult. So Lostutter is preparing for a costly legal battle, and Anonymous is seeking donations to help him.
