The plastic of the Galaxy S4 may look cheaper than the glass and metal of the iPhone 5, but Samsung's new smartphone is considerably more expensive to build. In fact, it costs almost 20% more.
IHS iSuppli opened up a Samsung Galaxy S4 and calculated the cost of each component needed to build a 16GB device. The total cost was $244, 17% more than the iPhone 5 and 15% more than the SIII.
And this is because of its characteristics.
“Some of the features that have driven up the price include its larger Full HD display, Samsung’s most powerful processor, and several new sensors,” IHS analyst Vincent Leung said in a statement.
Of course, one of the biggest advantages that Samsung has over Apple is that even though the Korean company pays more to manufacture the S4, it is also the largest supplier of its materials, meaning that the bulk of the costs for manufacturing the device go back into the same pocket.
The big question right now is how much the Galaxy S4 will cost. The company hasn't announced a price yet, so no one knows if the increased cost will ultimately be passed on to consumers.
